While it is important to keep a worker’s physical well-being in mind, it is also important to note your employee’s mental health. Mental well-being can be a hard topic to overcome in the workplace, as it can be a very personal subject. In the West, it is very embarrassing or shameful to come out and address your mental issues, though in recent years, this trend has begun to change.

To begin with the most non-invasive method of helping your workers, offer them knowledge of tools to use or programs to enter. For instance, Mental Health America offers a variety of mental health screening tools, as well as detailed explanations of what screening tool best fits certain thoughts, all for free. This is the best first step for approaching the topic of mental health as the whole process is anonymous, and it does not place any extra strain on the workplace.Another easy step would be to incorporate a Well-being or Health section into the employee website. It would allow employees to know that help is readily available when needed.

Companies around the world have begun to adopt “healthy corners” or break room areas dedicated to allow workers to unwind during work, to keep their bodies strong and minds focused, but a good idea would be to make use of that space to host occasional in-house events. This idea is popular in the West, where most columnists currently focus on a healthy mind rather than a healthy body [1]. For these events, the company would hire a therapist to come in for half a day and provide workshops, that would better help employees. In doing this, the employees make the start of a relationship with a mental health professional, and if their mental health concerns them, they have a person in mind who can help them.

The best example of a company going above and beyond to help their employees is DuPont. For DuPont, the idea of bringing in a professional to help their employees is not new, as back in 1941 they began their in-house Alcoholics Anonymous program, which later became their Employee Assistance Program (EAP). DuPont has incredible success in EAP participation, with twice as many employees using their services than the national average of around 4.5% [2].

This knowledge is important as DuPont is now working on “Chestnut Global Partner’s Workplace Outcome Suite” (WOS). It is a free survey tool that documents the cost of different EAPs and how effective they are. One of the main reasons DuPont succeeds in the mental health realm so much is because safety and health, as well as respect for people are two of DuPont’s five main foundations. It is what they are known for. Just as MeiTuan is known for its bright yellow uniforms and carriers, DuPont is known for how much it cares for its employees.

This works for a reason, a 2018 study found that 72% of employees wanted their employers to focus on mental health, rating higher than the desire for equality, sustainability, or diversity [3]. Overall, the best thing a company can do to help its workers is to raise awareness of mental health. This can be done in so many ways, such as hiring an EAP or just bringing in a therapist a few times a year.

Employers do not need to overhaul their company to have mental health as a core value, all they need to do is keep their workers aware of their options. It is especially easy for workers to receive help without fear of shame, especially with how the internet has evolved. For instance, employees can connect to a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist (which is especially effective for workplace depression) and receive help through any combination of over the phone, through video messaging, or emails to get sufficient help [4], they just need to know how to find them, and they need the motivation to take the first step. Make sure your employees know that their physical and mental well-being is being looked after, it will increase productivity and keep your workers healthy.
